Photos: Arlen Donald and Illora of the West Lea
I confess, friends, that I had so much fun at Uprising, my first anniversary of joining the SCA, that I didn't take a single photo, other than a few of our tent in the windy weather, banners flying. I highly recommend the totally non period solar garden spike lights you can see in the second picture. They were really nice when it got dark at night to prevent tripping over the ropes. Our tent, purchased in May, did wonderfully in the wind and storms after a last-minute trip to Wal-Mart about 20 miles from the site to get extra stakes, but putting up a wall tent in probably 40 mph winds was enough to get me into quite a rage. Photos: Arlen Donald and Illora of the West Lea As for what else I did at Uprising, which was a glorious five days long, I attended a very spurious and not at all historical herbalism class (do not recommend), a beginner belly dancing class (recommend), and a veil and wimple making class (fun and useful, as I got a new veil and wimple made that day, but no real documentation, more a basic sewing hour with materials provided for the class fee, but I get compliments on that veil and wimple every time I wear them). I was honored to be invited to the Queen's Tea at the invitation of Queen Kortland, where the queen's guests enjoyed very dainty refreshments and music and dancing from artists around the kingdom. I entered the Artisans' Display (formerly called the Laurel's Prize Tourney), where I displayed various garb I had made with different seam finishes, and how historical the techniques were, how the seams performed, and how much time they took to complete. I'll share photos of the seams and my write-up at some point soon, I'm sure. I also enjoyed meeting the Queen of Merides, who attended the event, attended numerous parties and gatherings, camped with the marvelously weird Slug household, enjoyed my first midnight crepes hosted by some of our friends from the Barony of Loch Salaan, and generally had a fantastic time.
